Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu said that one, who renounces the things that are temporal, mundane desires and the pleasures of this world, is a devotee. If we fight with our mundane tendencies, we are already considered devotees. Our mind may propose many things, but if we reject them we can be considered devotees. This is the only way to make progress towards the most precious treasure of our existence: The wonderful Sri Krishna. Therefore it is said that the seed of bhakti is renunciation and that practice of self-denial is nectar, because we come closer and closer to the very Nectar itself.
In this way our Gurus have taught us, ever since the moment we were initiated, to renounce the things of this world. First we renounce the grosser things, which consist in eating meat, intoxicating, gambling and having illicit sex. But then comes the more subtle things, which is our anarthas, our desires and our mundane bonds. And then we will get into the constant fight, or our Kuruksetra, to reach the highest and most beautiful ideal. Not doing this is simply to consider spiritual suicide.
Our desire to renounce the mundane things is something that comes gradually by the varnashrama system (which one has to pass for one’s spiritual perfection) or one can also get it from Lord Krishna Himself as His Divine Grace to our desperate longing by illuminating us with the Light of Truth. I would like to say that the latter is what I have experienced during so many years and almost intuitively, because I didn’t know any devotees of Krishna and I didn’t even know where to give myself. Not until I met my Gurudeva Srila Atulananda Acarya, who gave me the blessing to let me be in the asham for renounced mothers in the Vrinda mission, in the same moment as I received the sacred initiation, and my Srila Guru Maharaj confirmed it shortly after this.
Ever since then I have been going through many inter fights and many painful moments, but undoubtedly I feel a much greater happiness and satisfaction when my demons give up and scared run away by the grace of my spiritual masters and of you, Vaisnavas. So there is nothing to fear, for we are well protected by our divine guardians, and by Sri Krishna’s grace. But we must understand that it is necessary to go through many tests to strengthen our sincere effort to satisfy our Divine Lord and His devotees as faithful, loving and surrendered servants.
Renunciation is the mature and sane position for our mind. There is no other alternative for a concrete and secure progress. Therefore our Gurus encourage us all matajis to join and participate in this wonderful ashram for women in the order of renunciation, especially the adult women, because our excellent mission high mission is needs very much our participation and our devotion. We have to enthuse, support and protect other mothers on this beautiful way to Sri Krishna with the nectar of our renunciation, of our abdication, example and sacrifice, to inspire them and make it possible for them to practice their renunciation from mundane things for sometime, especially before they get married.
There is nothing more wonderful than this realization, instead of continuing to get bound by the bounds of family affection and other bounds in this material world. And even more as we know that the material bounds is the great impediment for our love for Sri Krishna to flourish. Furthermore we will, sooner or later, have to renounce. We can no longer thing that our children or grandchildren shall protect us when we get old, it isn’t like that anymore. On the contrary, we are the ones who have to protect our children until our last breath. The ashram of renounced mothers is the place where we all can come to practice for this, because in each one of us is this latent, this feeling of renunciation. One just has to give it a proper development and pray very much to become more and more attached to the Beautiful, our eternal and highly Beloved.
Actually, everyone is called to accept this great invitation from Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Guru. Therefore each day should be one more day of renunciation and surrender, one more day in faith and prayer. And this means to put away our selfish position as separate enjoyers, and instead become Sri Krishna’s servants and well-wishers of the Truth, and thus serve and love others better and better. Because we shall no longer have the mixed interests of our body and our mind, but only be interested in Sri Krishna and the Nectar or the Joy of our true renunciation from this material world.
